Abstract

MI Al-Jumhuriyah is the school studied, to find out how well fifth grade students can understand mathematical concepts. For students, understanding concepts is very important, especially when learning mathematics. Because it will be a challenge for students to be able to solve a problem without knowing the concept. According to Kilpatrick at.al (Ruqoyah, 2020) is the ability of students to restate previously learned concepts, apply concepts algorithmically, connect various concepts (internal and external mathematics), and develop the necessary and sufficient conditions of a concept is an indicator of conceptual understanding they. Applying a learning model based on students' experiences can improve their conceptual understanding since knowing the concept. The Experiential Learning model is then given as an alternative. Kolb (Rahayu, S and Rohayati. 2016) said that the Experiential Learning model is circular learning whose stages influence each other. Because Concrete Experience (real experience) influences Reflective Observation (observation and discussion), RO leads to Abstract Conceptualization (creating a concept) and then Active Experimentation (being able to apply it). The purpose of this study is 1. Application of the Experiential Learning learning model. 2. Achievement of ability to understand mathematical concepts 3. Experiential Learning Model is better than conventional. Quasi experiment was chosen as the method in this study with the Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The research sample includes 33 experimental classes and 30 control classes. Data were collected through descriptive pretest and posttest which showed the results of understanding mathematical concepts. The pretest results showed that the two classes had the same low conceptual understanding ability. Then after learning is given, and the posttest is tested. Posttest results after being analyzed with data normalization and Mann Whitney test because the posttest results data are not normal. Then the conclusion obtained is that the Experiential Learning learning model is better than conventional.
